Overview
On the grey edges of South London, two parents move through their days like strangers sharing a house. Penny rings up groceries while Phil ferries passengers through streets that feel as distant as his own marriage. Their adult children offer little comfort: a daughter ground down by cleaning work, a son coiled with resentment and no real prospects. Mike Leigh finds the quiet devastation in ordinary life, and asks whether love, once gone cold, can ever be coaxed back.
