Overview
Phyllis Saroka never planned on coaching basketball. A white teacher scraping together money to open her own restaurant, she reluctantly takes charge of a Brooklyn high school team full of raw, undisciplined talent and complicated lives. What begins as a transactional arrangement slowly becomes something more genuine, as she earns the players' trust and they push each other toward a city championship. The film finds real warmth in its corner of Brooklyn without pretending the cultural distance between coach and team simply disappears.
