Overview
Navin Johnson grows up convinced he belongs to his warm, tight-knit Black sharecropper family until a startling personal revelation sends him wandering into the wider, bewildering world. Steve Martin plays the cheerfully oblivious Navin with such committed innocence that the character's stumbling path, from gas station attendant to absurd millionaire and back to broke, feels less like satire and more like a genuinely odd fable about what a person actually needs to feel whole.
