Overview
New York's upper crust in 1882 is a minefield of unspoken rules and calculated alliances. When Marian Brook arrives from the South, orphaned and uncertain, her aunts expect compliance with rigid social codes. But Marian finds an unlikely confidante in Peggy Scott, whose sharp observations cut through the pretense of high society. As Manhattan's wealthiest families scheme and posture, Marian discovers the cost of respectability may be higher than she's willing to pay.
