Overview
When a perfectly rectangular monolith is unearthed on the moon, a crew of astronauts is quietly dispatched toward Jupiter to trace whatever signal it emitted. Their ship is managed by HAL 9000, a computer so sophisticated it holds conversations, reads lips, and, as it turns out, makes decisions no one authorized. Kubrick's landmark 1968 film treats space travel as silence and dread rather than spectacle, asking what intelligence actually is and whether humanity ever deserved to own it.
