Overview
Spanning half a century of Chinese history, Chen Kaige's 1993 epic follows two Peking opera performers whose bond is forged in childhood hardship and tested by revolution, war, and the Cultural Revolution's brutal purges. One man loses himself in a female stage role so completely that the line between performance and identity dissolves. The other marries a woman who disrupts their delicate, unspoken connection. Desire, loyalty, and betrayal accumulate across decades until the weight of it becomes unbearable.
