Overview
Guido is a charming, irrepressible optimist whose courtship of a schoolteacher feels lifted from a storybook. When the war arrives and his family is swept into a Nazi concentration camp, he refuses to let his young son understand the horror surrounding them. Instead, he constructs an elaborate fiction, framing their imprisonment as an elaborate point-scoring game with a tank as the grand prize. Roberto Benigni's film earns its tears precisely because the comedy never stops fighting the darkness.
