Overview
Peter Watkins' 1971 mockumentary presents a dystopian scenario where overcrowded prisons force inmates to choose between cells and a three-day ordeal in the desert. Framed as a game show premise, prisoners (many antiwar activists) are hunted across barren terrain by armed officers. What begins as apparent freedom quickly reveals itself as calculated sport, where the deck is fundamentally stacked. Watkins crafts a scathing critique of state power and surveillance disguised as documentary realism.
