Overview
When a 19-year-old university student abandons her studies to marry into a wealthy household in 1920s China, she quickly learns that the estate's rituals are really instruments of control. Each night, red lanterns are lit outside whichever wife the lord chooses to visit, turning intimacy into a competition and the women against each other. Zhang Yimou frames this suffocating world with extraordinary visual precision, using color and ceremony to reveal how tradition can become a kind of beautiful cage.
