Overview
Bernard Black runs his cluttered bookshop with the temperament of a man perpetually nursing a hangover and a grudge. His long-suffering assistant Manny bears the brunt of Bernard's contempt, a gentle soul whose mere presence seems to offend. Together with Fran, who drifts between them seeking refuge from her own chaos, they've built something resembling friendship through shared dysfunction. The shop itself becomes a refuge of sorts: wine-soaked, book-lined, and sustained entirely by the peculiar logic of people who really shouldn't work together.
