Overview
Feudal Japan, the eleventh century. A principled governor is cast into exile, and the family he leaves behind is torn apart by slave traders. His children, Zushio and Anju, end up in the service of Sansho, a bailiff whose cruelty is matched only by his power. Kenji Mizoguchi crafts one of cinema's most quietly devastating meditations on compassion, duty, and the cost of surviving a world that punishes decency at every turn.
