Overview
Fresh out of medical school and angling for a cushy posting with a wealthy patron, Noboru Yasumoto finds himself stuck instead at a shabby rural clinic under a cantankerous doctor everyone calls Red Beard. Resentful and resistant, Yasumoto pushes back at every turn, only to discover that his irascible superior is quietly, methodically teaching him something no classroom could. Kurosawa's late masterwork is a film about humility, slowly earned, and the kind of medicine that costs the person giving it the most.
