Overview
In 2021, France returned twenty-six artifacts seized from Dahomey to Benin, a moment that forced uncomfortable questions about cultural ownership and historical justice. Mati Diop's documentary follows these objects on their symbolic journey home, listening to the voices of historians, activists, and young Beninese citizens who must now decide what repatriation actually means. One sculpture becomes an unexpected narrator of its own displacement, transforming a bureaucratic transaction into something spiritually charged and deeply human.
