Overview
Spike Lee draws on his own childhood to paint a warm, rowdy picture of a Black family holding itself together in 1970s Brooklyn. A schoolteacher mother keeps the household running while her idealistic jazz-musician husband chases gigs and resists compromise. Their five kids fight, scheme, and grow up in real time, navigating a neighborhood that is both tight-knit and fraying at the edges. It is specific enough to feel like memory, universal enough to feel like yours.
