Overview
A group of ambitious medical students in Chicago decide to do what no textbook recommends: stop their own hearts, peek at whatever lies beyond, and come back to report. The experiment works, more or less. But each of them carries guilt from their past, and the afterlife, it turns out, has a long memory. Joel Schumacher's film balances gothic atmosphere with genuine psychological dread, asking whether the dead can forgive us before we get the chance to forgive ourselves.
