Overview
Eleven-year-old Vada Sultenfuss has grown up surrounded by the dead. Her father runs the local funeral parlor, her mother never came home from the hospital, and her grandmother barely recognizes the living. Vada channels her anxieties into a crush on her English teacher and a summer poetry class, while her loyal, allergy-prone best friend Thomas J. remains her one constant. Then her father falls for a new woman, and the season starts reshaping everything Vada thought she understood about love and loss.
