Overview
Auschwitz, 1944. Saul Ausländer is a Sonderkommando, one of the prisoners conscripted to dispose of the dead. Amid the mechanized brutality of the camp's killing apparatus, he becomes fixated on a single act of defiance: securing a proper Jewish burial for a boy he believes to be his son. László Nemes keeps the camera close, suffocatingly so, turning a historical atrocity into something almost unbearably intimate. Redemption and delusion blur until neither word quite fits.
