Overview
A Belarusian boy named Florya slips away from home to join partisan fighters during the Nazi occupation, convinced he is running toward something. What he finds is the systematic destruction of everything around him. Director Elem Klimov renders the Eastern Front not as history but as sustained psychological trauma, following Florya through burning villages and mass graves until his face has aged decades in days. Few films have depicted the machinery of atrocity with this kind of unblinking, hallucinatory force.
