Overview
Medieval Russia provides a brutal backdrop for one of cinema's most searching portraits of an artist at war with his own conscience. Andrei Rublev, the 15th-century monk who would become Russia's most revered icon painter, moves through a fractured, violent land searching for something close to grace. After witnessing a savage military raid, he falls silent and sets down his brushes entirely. Tarkovsky turns the question of how a man creates beauty inside a world without mercy into something close to philosophy.
