Overview
London, late 1800s. A doctor named Frederick Treves pulls a grotesquely deformed man named John Merrick from the cruelty of a carnival sideshow, and what follows is one of cinema's most quietly devastating portraits of humanity. David Lynch directs with restrained precision, finding tenderness where audiences might expect horror. Merrick, long treated as spectacle and property, turns out to possess a rich inner life, and the film asks who, exactly, is civilized and who is not.
