Overview
Childhood in the Ekdahl household is a warm, theatrical thing, full of candlelight and performance and the hum of family life. When the children's father dies, their mother's remarriage to a rigid, cold bishop shatters that world completely. Bergman's late masterwork traces how young Alexander experiences this passage from abundance to austerity, from love to cruelty, and how the bonds of an extended, imperfect family can still reach across the darkness to pull people back.
