Overview
In feudal Japan, a samurai lies dead in a forest grove. A bandit, a widow, and a woodcutter each step forward to explain what happened, and each tells a completely different story. Kurosawa's landmark 1950 film turns a single act of violence into a meditation on memory, self-interest, and the stories people construct to protect themselves. Truth, it turns out, may be the one thing no witness can actually provide.
