Overview
Ridley Scott frames one of history's most studied ambitions through a lens that keeps returning to the bedroom. Napoleon Bonaparte's military campaigns and political maneuvers are rendered with brutal, large-scale spectacle, but the film's real obsession is his tempestuous bond with Josephine, a relationship that consumed him as thoroughly as any battlefield. Joaquin Phoenix plays the emperor as a brooding, contradictory figure, simultaneously ridiculous and fearsome, tender and ruthless, conquering Europe while losing ground at home.
