Overview
Akira Kurosawa transplants the bones of King Lear into feudal Japan, where an aging lord named Hidetora believes he can retire peacefully after splitting his domain among his three sons. The plan collapses almost immediately. What follows is one of cinema's great meditations on pride, inheritance, and the cruelty sons learn from their fathers. Shot in breathtaking widescreen with battle sequences that feel genuinely apocalyptic, Ran asks whether any empire built on violence can ever be passed down intact.
