Overview
A weathered ronin arrives at the gates of a powerful clan, requesting permission to die on their grounds. The clan's counselor, skeptical of the old warrior's intentions, probes him with pointed questions. What unfolds is a slow, precise dismantling of samurai mythology, told through nested testimonies and quiet confrontations. Masaki Kobayashi's 1962 film uses the framework of a death ritual to interrogate the gap between the code of honor Japan worshipped and the brutal poverty it produced.
