Overview
An aging Swedish professor, respected by colleagues but emotionally remote from the people who know him best, spends a long car ride confronting the wreckage of his inner life. Traveling with his quietly resentful daughter-in-law to accept an honorary degree, he picks up a string of strangers whose youth and vitality pull him toward unexpected self-examination. Dreams blur into memory, and memory into regret, as Ingmar Bergman turns a simple road trip into one of cinema's most searching portraits of a life half-lived.
