Overview
Andy Dufresne arrives at Shawshank in 1947 convicted of murders he may not have committed, and prison should break him. It doesn't. A soft-spoken banker with a gift for numbers, he quietly earns the trust of fellow inmates while doing the corrupt warden's dirty work, all without surrendering whatever it is that keeps him upright. His friendship with a seasoned prisoner named Red becomes the film's quiet center, a portrait of dignity maintained under the worst conditions imaginable.
