Overview
Long Beach, 1994. Erin Gruwell walks into a freshman English class where gang rivalries, racial tension, and low expectations have already decided everyone's fate, or so the school assumes. Armed with little more than determination and a stack of blank journals, she coaxes teenagers written off by the system into writing their own stories. Based on real events, the film is a quiet argument for what education can do when a single teacher refuses to accept the ceiling others set.
