Overview
Kitano's HANA-BI follows Nishi, a burned-out Tokyo detective holding together a life that is quietly falling apart. His wife is dying, his partner was crippled during a job that went badly, and guilt has settled into him like weather. To pay off a yakuza debt, he robs a bank. What follows is less a crime story than a meditation on obligation, silence, and the small, tender gestures a man makes when words have completely failed him.
