Overview
Reverend Toller tends a nearly empty colonial church in upstate New York, keeping a journal and quietly drinking himself toward some unnamed reckoning. When a pregnant parishioner asks him to counsel her radicalized husband, a man consumed by environmental despair, Toller finds the man's anguish seeping into his own faith like a slow poison. Paul Schrader's austerely beautiful film watches a man of God inch toward an act he cannot take back.
