Overview
In the closing years of the Civil War, a young Boston colonel named Robert Gould Shaw is handed an extraordinary and thankless command: the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, one of the Union's first regiments composed entirely of Black soldiers. What follows is a portrait of men fighting on two fronts at once, against Confederate rifles and against the casual racism of their own side. Edward Zwick's film earns its emotion honestly, grounding history in faces and choices rather than spectacle.
