Overview
Stanford psychologist Philip Zimbardo designed what was meant to be a straightforward two-week study on authority and obedience. He assigned college students roles as guards and prisoners in a makeshift basement jail. Within days, the experiment spiraled into something neither Zimbardo nor his team anticipated. What began as academic inquiry descended into psychological cruelty, raising uncomfortable questions about power, morality, and how quickly ordinary people can become capable of extraordinary harm.
