Overview
Postwar Hiroshima is still smoldering when a new kind of violence takes root in its black markets. Shozo Hirono, a young veteran with nothing left to lose, drifts into the yakuza underworld and discovers that the gang loyalty sold to him is mostly fiction. Director Kinji Fukasaku shoots the chaos in a raw, almost documentary register, charting how rival factions backstab, fracture, and reform in cycles that mirror the brutal absurdity of the war Japan had just lost.
