Overview
Rome's most notorious ruler gets the full treatment in this controversial 1979 production, written by Gore Vidal and bankrolled by Penthouse founder Bob Guccione. When the ailing Tiberius finally dies, the young Caligula inherits the throne and almost immediately begins his descent into cruelty, paranoia, and excess. Malcolm McDowell plays the emperor as a man who mistakes unlimited power for permission, and the film never lets the audience forget how quickly authority becomes something monstrous.
