Overview
In the steel mill towns of western Pennsylvania, three friends drink and hunt and dream before shipping off to Vietnam. What the war does to them, physically and psychologically, is the film's quiet, devastating subject. Michael Cimino tracks the distance between the men they were at a wedding and the men who return, or don't, across nearly three hours that feel both exhausting and essential. Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage each carry a different kind of wound.
