Overview
The summer of 1967 tears Detroit apart. When a late-night police raid on an unlicensed bar ignites four days of street violence, director Kathryn Bigelow plants the camera right in the middle of it, refusing to look away. The film's brutal centerpiece, a prolonged siege at the Algiers Motel, strips away any comfortable distance between the audience and the ugliest machinery of racial terror. History, it turns out, is not a safe place to visit.
