Overview
Todd Solondz plants his camera in the quiet suburbs of New Jersey and refuses to look away. Happiness follows a cluster of ordinary people, sisters, neighbors, therapists, lonely men, each nursing private hungers they can barely name. What makes the film so unsettling is not its provocations but its compassion. Solondz treats even his most monstrous characters with a straight face, asking the audience to sit with discomfort rather than dismiss it. Few films have been this honest about loneliness.
