Overview
A rigidly controlled piano instructor in Vienna lives under her mother's oppressive thumb, her inner life cordoned off behind perfectionism and propriety. When a devoted student begins courting her, Erika finds herself drawn into a relationship that forces uncomfortable confrontations with her own desires and the psychological chains binding her. Michael Haneke's film examines desire, shame, and the violence that emerges when repression finally cracks.
