Overview
A schoolteacher in rural Northern Germany observes the fractures widening beneath his village's orderly surface. Before the First World War arrives to reshape everything, a string of unsettling incidents unfolds, each more disturbing than the last. Suspicion and accusation seep into households and schoolyards alike. Director Michael Haneke constructs a portrait of a community where discipline masks something far more sinister, where innocence itself becomes suspect.
