Overview
Before the perfume, before the little black dress, before the name meant anything at all, there was an orphan with nothing. This biographical drama traces Gabrielle Chanel from the austerity of convent life through poverty, wartime upheaval, and a series of love affairs that burned out before they could settle. Shirley MacLaine plays Chanel at the peak of her power, while the film keeps circling back to ask what exactly it cost to build such an empire.
