Overview
Late 18th-century Brittany provides the setting for one of cinema's most quietly devastating love stories. A painter arrives on a remote coastal island with a secret commission: capture the likeness of a young noblewoman destined for an arranged marriage. Her subject refuses to sit. What begins as a study in observation slowly becomes something neither woman anticipated, a mutual gaze that carries the full weight of desire, time, and the particular grief of loving someone you cannot keep.
