Overview
Kaji is a young idealist who believes better treatment of workers will produce better results, a theory he gets the chance to test when he accepts a post overseeing Chinese laborers at a Manchurian mine. The job keeps him out of the military and close to his new wife, but the compromises come fast. Corrupt administrators, sadistic foremen, and the ever-present military police ensure that humanitarian principles are luxury goods in wartime, and Kaji learns that cost the hard way.
