Overview
Livia moves through postwar Italy as a woman divided against herself. The wife of a senior Republic official, she is travelling to Venice under the watch of Ugo, her husband's quiet, observant spy. Her destination is Helmut Schultz, an SS lieutenant and her secret lover. What passes between them is less a romance than an obsession, and the journey forces Livia to reckon honestly with her own desires. Venice, when she finally arrives, offers no mercy.
