Overview
December 1937. The Imperial Japanese Army enters Nanjing, and what follows over the next six weeks becomes one of the most devastating atrocities of the twentieth century. Director Lu Chuan films the Nanjing Massacre in stark black and white, moving between perpetrators, survivors, and bystanders as the city collapses into violence. Neither polemic nor simple memorial, the film sits uncomfortably close to its subjects on all sides, refusing easy moral distance while bearing witness to suffering on an almost incomprehensible scale.
