Overview
Before William Shakespeare wrote Hamlet, he was a father who buried a son. Set in Elizabethan England, the film follows Agnes, a fiercely intuitive woman who marries a young glover's apprentice with restless ambitions and watches him chase fame in London while she raises their children in Stratford. When their boy Hamnet falls gravely ill, the distance between husband and wife becomes something far harder to cross than miles. Director Chloé Zhao brings Maggie O'Farrell's acclaimed novel to the screen, centering a story that history has largely overlooked: the grief of a mother, and the play that her son's death quietly made possible.
