Overview
Veronika and Boris share a fleeting happiness on the banks of Moscow's river, cranes drifting overhead, before the war pulls him to the front and leaves her behind with promises. Letters go unanswered. Her home is reduced to rubble. She moves in with his family, where a calculating cousin circles her grief. Mikhail Kalatozov's 1957 film is a study in survival under pressure, anchored by Tatiana Samoilova's raw, restless performance.
