Overview
Captain Nathan Algren arrives in Meiji-era Japan as a hired gun, tasked with drilling imperial soldiers for a government eager to erase the old ways. But repeated contact with the samurai he was sent to suppress changes him. Their discipline, their code, their willingness to die for something larger than ambition, all of it gets under his skin. What begins as a mercenary contract slowly becomes a reckoning with what Algren believes, and what he is willing to fight for.
