Overview
Terrence Malick turns the story of John Smith and the Powhatan people into something closer to a poem than a period piece. Set against the Virginia coastline of 1607, the film traces the collision of two worlds through the eyes of the young woman history remembers as Pocahontas. Love, displacement, and wonder share equal weight here. Malick is less interested in conquest as event than in what it costs the human heart to live through it.
