Overview
Stripped of everything but the will to survive, a ragged group of prisoners breaks free from a Soviet labor camp during World War II and sets off on foot across thousands of miles of unforgiving terrain. Siberian wilderness, the Gobi Desert, the Himalayas: the land itself becomes the true antagonist. Peter Weir directs with quiet ferocity, letting the physical punishment speak for itself as men from different nations discover what endurance actually costs.
