Overview
Redmond Barry is born with nothing but nerve and ambition, and in 18th century Europe, that turns out to be enough, at least for a while. Kubrick traces his improbable climb through duels, mercenary armies, and a calculated marriage into the aristocracy, all rendered in candlelit compositions of extraordinary beauty. The further Barry ascends, the more brittle his footing becomes. Prestige, it turns out, is a costume that fits poorly on a man who clawed his way into it.
